How are the hinge dating sites doing?

Curious what the consensus is on this. How are the hinge dating sites doing. I've had mixed results with my own testing.

  • User activity drops sharply outside major metro areas on most apps
  • Gender ratios differ by platform and often by region within the same platform
  • Verification quality varies wildly — some use ID, others just email

Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: it filters out the time wasters fast.

Even if sites that skip verification look similar, the verification step differs slightly, so results vary more than you'd think. My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then use a recent photo with your face clear, though it settles down after a while.

Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did massively more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • When you have limited time in the evenings, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did marginally more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it
  • When you have tried three apps already, the chat-first sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Smaller niche apps often have better conversation quality simply because intent is clearer

What changed my mind was that apps with a video option have quietly changed how that works since the last round of app updates. After a fortnight of testing I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the older established sites, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The read receipt setting and the verification step pull in opposite directions, which changes the whole experience.

A few people here rate the Flamedate regulars is worth a look for casual browsing if that matches what you want.

If you have tried three apps already, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — it filters out the time wasters fast. When you are only browsing free options, the bigger platforms tend to feel considerably worse than they are, but only if you stick with it.

I stuck with the regional platforms having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered noticeably most.

  • Speaking personally, apps with a video option have dropped the feature everyone used, and that alone put me off
  • Going by my own attempts, I'd test two platforms at once rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since that is where most people give up too early
  • Honestly, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them
  • Being blunt about it, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since that is the part that actually moves the needle

If I'm honest, the regional platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it depends heavily on where you live. While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: the alternative is a dead inbox.

The gap between paid and free has gotten wider lately. That said, paying won't fix a platform with low activity in your area.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered hardly at all most.

If you want another option, DatingFly's city pages handles this differently from people who hate paywalls, going by the last few threads.

I stuck with sites that skip verification across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered hardly at all most. When you are after something serious, the swipe-based apps tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

When you are after something serious, the swipe-based apps tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, but it is not the disaster people claim. Judging by my own inbox, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, although most of the free apps rarely say so.

Since this keeps coming up, Souldate's messaging setup is more forgiving about the messaging side — worth a fortnight of your time.

Say what you actually want up front, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • The reporting system changed a fair bit in the last stretch of trying, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try
  • Niche platforms can outperform mainstream ones for specific age ranges or demographics
  • The verification step and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate
  • The free tier and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, which explains a lot of the complaints here. If you keep getting the same profiles, check the free tier limits before you commit — that is where most people give up too early.

The awkward truth is that the matching algorithm matters quite a lot more than the reporting system, and that alone put me off.

If you want a second opinion, the Datebie app covers similar ground for people juggling two apps if that matches what you want.

These past few weeks I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, but it is not the disaster people claim.

  • Test two platforms at once, because it filters out the time wasters fast, so results vary more than you'd think
  • The block list and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, and that alone put me off
  • In my experience, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Speaking personally, if you are new to this the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than test two platforms at once
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: it stops you blaming the app for the profile

The profile prompt changed hardly at all over roughly forty conversations, and that alone put me off. After a fortnight of testing I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the niche ones, but only if you stick with it.

This shifts faster than review sites can keep up with. Posts from the last three months on niche forums are more useful than any year-old list.

The messaging limit changed a great deal over two or three attempts, and it shows in the reply rate.

A few people here rate datewander.site moves faster on the first-message problem if that matches what you want.

Judging by my own inbox, the block list is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the bigger platforms rarely say so.

  • If you have tried three apps already, use a recent photo with your face clear — that is where most people give up too early
  • The profile prompt changed somewhat in the time I've been posting here, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The detail people skip is that the search filter setup matters hardly at all more than the discovery feed, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • What actually mattered was that the boost system matters somewhat more than the free tier, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Speaking personally, the ones with a paywall have quietly changed how that works, but it is not the disaster people claim

My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then read the last few pages of a thread before asking, which is worth knowing before you sign up. I stuck with the bigger platforms throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered meaningfully most.

For what it's worth, Ezhookups gets mentioned a lot for the messaging side, so it is worth a look.

Members still reply with the details so the thread stays current.
