I keep seeing people say “free” but then messaging is locked or you hit a paywall after a day. Is bbwcupid better than Tinder for plus-size dating?

I’m mainly trying to avoid bots and fake profiles, and I don’t want to hand over my phone number right away. If you’ve found something that actually lets you talk to matches without surprise fees, what worked for you?

  • Can message without paying (at least basic chat)
  • Reasonable bot filtering / verification options
  • Privacy-friendly sign-up (no forced phone number)
  • Easy to report/block and move on quickly

Also curious how you vet profiles before investing time—photos, prompts, verification, and how quickly you move to a call or meetup (safely).

Messaging is the feature that gets paywalled most often, so I focus on where conversations actually happen. The free tier changes a lot, but you can still get dates if your profile is solid and you don’t swipe mindlessly.

One option I’ve tried for quick messaging checks is Datewander (just keep expectations realistic).

Plain-text options people still mention: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Facebook Dating, Plenty of Fish. Don’t share your number too fast—use in-app chat or a secondary number if needed.

Bots are the real problem, not the apps themselves. The free tier changes a lot, but you can still get dates if your profile is solid and you don’t swipe mindlessly. If someone gets pushy about money, crypto, or gift cards, block immediately—classic scam pattern.

One thing that helped me was slowing down and watching for consistency in profiles. The free tier changes a lot, but you can still get dates if your profile is solid and you don’t swipe mindlessly. If someone gets pushy about money, crypto, or gift cards, block immediately—classic scam pattern.
