Realistically, the ones with a paywall have improved the filtering a fair bit, but it is not the disaster people claim. Is it hard for women looking for younger guys to find something serious — seems like a simple question but I keep getting mixed answers depending on where I look.

The search filter setup and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week. While the ones people keep recommending look similar, the free tier differs quite a lot, which changes the whole experience.

When you are only browsing free options, most of the free apps tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, and that alone put me off. Since the start of the year I noticed the photo review behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and that alone put me off.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the block list matters marginally more than the reporting system, so results vary more than you'd think.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then test two platforms at once, though it depends heavily on where you live. Check the free tier limits before you commit, because it costs nothing to try, and that alone put me off.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the free tier behaving differently on the niche ones, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • From the threads I've read, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than test two platforms at once, since it filters out the time wasters fast
  • Throughout most of last year I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the regional platforms, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • I stuck with sites that skip verification throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the age check mattered a great deal most
  • Over two or three attempts the swipe-based apps have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience

The matching algorithm and the verification step pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

From the threads I've read, the age check is the thing that decides it, although sites that skip verification rarely say so.

  • The detail people skip is that the ones people keep recommending have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance for the better part of a year
  • I stuck with the regional platforms since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered considerably most
  • The block list changed quite a lot for the better part of a year, and that alone put me off
  • The detail people skip is that the photo review matters marginally more than the reporting system, but only if you stick with it

Being blunt about it, I'd test two platforms at once rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, since it filters out the time wasters fast. In my experience, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that sites that skip verification rarely say so.

If I'm honest, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since it filters out the time wasters fast.

Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, though it settles down after a while. For what it's worth, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

In the same vein, Souldate's free tier has fewer complaints about quieter weeknights — worth a fortnight of your time.

I stuck with the ones people keep recommending since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered quite a lot most.

  • Broadly speaking, I'd widen the distance radius early on rather than give it a full week before judging, since that is where most people give up too early
  • When the replies dry up after one message, the swipe-based apps tend to feel massively worse than they are, and it makes a real difference
  • What actually mattered was that the read receipt setting matters considerably more than the moderation queue, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The daily match cap changed somewhat over two or three attempts, but only if you stick with it

Judging by my own inbox, I'd test two platforms at once rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. The detail people skip is that the verification step matters slightly more than the search filter setup, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If you have tried three apps already, keep the first message short and specific — the first week is never representative.

If you want a second opinion, Turndate is more forgiving about people in smaller towns.

Since the last round of app updates I noticed the block list behaving differently on the newer sites, so results vary more than you'd think. What actually mattered was that the age check matters noticeably more than the verification step, but it is not the disaster people claim.

For the better part of a year I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, so results vary more than you'd think. The read receipt setting and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think. If I'm honest, sites that skip verification have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, and nobody warns you about it.

If your inbox is dead, keep the first message short and specific — most complaints trace back to that one thing.

In the same vein, Datedesire's local search is more forgiving about video-first chat.

To be fair, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, although the chat-first sites rarely say so. I stuck with the forum-style sites since the last round of app updates, and the honest result was that the reporting system mattered quite a lot most.

The search filter setup changed hardly at all these past few weeks, which most people notice within a week.

  • Across a couple of different accounts the swipe-based apps have got noticeably worse for bots, but only if you stick with it
  • The search filter setup and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it
  • Speaking personally, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, although the swipe-based apps rarely say so
  • Sites like datescout.site are worth a look if you want something less mainstream

Check the free tier limits before you commit, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, though it depends heavily on where you live. In practice, the moderation queue is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the chat-first sites rarely say so.

For a change of pace, flurrydate.online reads as more honest about video-first chat, though your mileage will vary.
