I spent two weeks seriously comparing platforms earlier this year. Happy to share what I found. Are there dating apps for parents with small children — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • Response rates on free plans are often artificially throttled
  • Free tiers have gotten worse year over year as platforms push premium
  • Desktop versions often have better filters than the mobile apps

In my experience, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that sites that skip verification rarely say so.

The pattern I keep seeing is: platforms with strong free features use that to build critical mass, then gradually restrict it once they have enough users to monetize. It's a predictable cycle.

My practical recommendation: give any new platform two weeks of active effort before judging. One or two sessions isn't enough to assess quality.

The reporting system changed hardly at all throughout most of last year, and it shows in the reply rate.

On the same subject, the Rendate app moves faster on anyone dating after a break, judging by what people report here.

Give it a full week before judging, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, and it shows in the reply rate. When you are in a smaller town, the swipe-based apps tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

In the last stretch of trying the forum-style sites have tightened up the reporting flow, which changes the whole experience. If you have tried three apps already, use a recent photo with your face clear — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

Most of what you'll find on review sites is written by people who get paid per signup. Take it with a handful of salt.

My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then test two platforms at once, and it makes a real difference.

Asked myself the same thing last month. The honest answer is that it shifts depending on your age range, location, and what you're actually looking for.

Read the last few pages of a thread before asking, because that is the part that actually moves the needle, which most people notice within a week. What changed my mind was that the reporting system matters considerably more than the free tier, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Datewander keeps coming up when people discuss this. The general feedback in threads I've read is that it's a more curated experience for people burned out on the mainstream apps.

When you have limited time in the evenings, apps with a video option tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and that alone put me off. These past few weeks the niche ones have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it makes a real difference.

Worth adding that the Flurrydate platform does more than most for anyone dating after a break, which is not nothing.

This changes faster than any comparison article can keep up with. Trust recent forum posts over SEO review sites.

Judging by my own inbox, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since the first week is never representative. When the replies dry up after one message, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel marginally worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live.

To be fair, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than use a recent photo with your face clear. My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, so results vary more than you'd think.

Worth saying that the decision to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight did a little more for me than switching platform, so results vary more than you'd think. Speaking personally, the messaging limit is the thing that decides it, although the newer sites rarely say so.

If you want a second opinion, Luvdate does more than most for the local side of things — worth a fortnight of your time.

Did a pretty thorough comparison run a few months back. The platforms with the most genuine users consistently share a few traits: stricter sign-up, slower growth, and less VC money behind them.

A few things I look for now:

  • Last-active timestamps — if a platform hides these, they're hiding low activity
  • Phone verification at sign-up — massive filter for throwaway accounts
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still unmatched for raw user numbers but algorithm-gated
  • OkCupid — slower but quality of conversations is noticeably higher
  • Smaller niche platforms sometimes punch above their weight for specific demographics

Keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, because the first week is never representative, and that alone put me off. Run the same profile in two different cities and you'll get completely different results.

If distance is the sticking point, datedesire works noticeably better for anyone after something slower, going by the last few threads.

Even if the swipe-based apps look similar, the photo review differs hardly at all, which explains a lot of the complaints here. The pattern I keep seeing is that most of the free apps have tightened up the reporting flow in the last stretch of trying.

When you keep matching but never talking, the newer sites tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, which changes the whole experience. The pattern I keep seeing is that the older established sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance over two or three attempts.

The free tier and the reporting system pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate. Say what you actually want up front, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, but it is not the disaster people claim.

What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have made the first message cost something after a slow start. What surprised me was that the swipe-based apps have tightened up the reporting flow having stuck with it a while.

If I'm honest, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to check the free tier limits before you commit rather than move to a proper conversation quickly.

  • Despite the fact that most of the free apps look similar, the daily match cap differs massively, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • What surprised me was that the photo review matters a little more than the age check, so results vary more than you'd think
  • For what it's worth, the niche ones have quietly changed how that works, but only if you stick with it
  • When you have tried three apps already, the ones with a paywall tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, which changes the whole experience
  • Going by my own attempts, the age check is the thing that decides it, while the chat-first sites rarely say so

Speaking personally, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight. From the threads I've read, I'd avoid opening with a compliment rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day.

People dating locally can post their own attempt and it will get read.
