This probably gets asked a lot but the answers keep changing. Has anyone used the mate1 dating site recently

Having tried most of these, the older established sites have got noticeably worse for bots, and that alone put me off.

If you are only browsing free options, move to a proper conversation quickly — it costs nothing to try. Realistically, apps with a video option have added checks that actually help, though it depends heavily on where you live. Judging by my own inbox, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than avoid opening with a compliment.

Having tried most of these, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since it costs nothing to try.

  • For the better part of a year the older established sites have improved the filtering a fair bit, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • When you keep getting the same profiles, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Granted the ones people keep recommending look similar, the block list differs a fair bit, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Platforms like datingfly.online are gaining community mentions as lower-competition alternatives

I stuck with the swipe-based apps in the last stretch of trying, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered hardly at all most. Speaking personally, the older established sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Over the last month I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the ones people keep recommending, and nobody warns you about it.

Going by last month's threads, Flamedate's free tier reads as more honest about quieter weeknights if that matches what you want.

This changes fast. A platform that was genuinely good 8 months ago can be noticeably worse now from one policy change.

Since this keeps coming up, the Datelink side of things handles this differently from anyone after something slower before you write the whole category off.

Move to a proper conversation quickly, because it costs nothing to try, though it depends heavily on where you live. I stuck with sites that skip verification across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered a fair bit most.

  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: it costs nothing to try
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: it saves a lot of wasted evenings
  • If I'm honest, the chat-first sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Worth saying that the decision to test two platforms at once did a little more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live.

Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

The awkward truth is that the bigger platforms have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance in the past six months.

If you want another option, the Ezhookups community gets mentioned a lot for video-first chat before you write the whole category off.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then test two platforms at once, so treat the reviews with caution. If you are after something serious, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the first week is never representative.

  • My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then widen the distance radius early on, but only if you stick with it
  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did a little more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Though the forum-style sites look similar, the reporting system differs a fair bit, so results vary more than you'd think

My advice would be to read the last few pages of a thread before asking and then check the free tier limits before you commit, and it shows in the reply rate.

Depending on what you are after, Rendate reads as more honest about the verification question if that matches what you want.

The boost system and the age check pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here. In practice, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, though apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

  • My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then keep the first message short and specific, which most people notice within a week
  • Since the start of the year apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, though it settles down after a while
  • My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, which is worth knowing before you sign up

For what it's worth, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than avoid opening with a compliment, since the difference in reply rate is obvious.

Although the bigger platforms look similar, the matching algorithm differs massively, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: the alternative is a dead inbox
  • From the threads I've read, if you are only browsing free options the answer is usually to say what you actually want up front rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight
  • If you have limited time in the evenings, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — that is where most people give up too early
  • The pattern I keep seeing is that the verification step matters meaningfully more than the messaging limit, and it makes a real difference

Over roughly forty conversations the regional platforms have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, and it shows in the reply rate.

If you are in a smaller town, keep the first message short and specific — it filters out the time wasters fast.

If I'm honest, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since that is where most people give up too early. What you read here is usually more reliable than anything ranked on Google.
