Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the plenty of fish dating site free for all messaging features is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • The messaging limit and the block list pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Realistically, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since that is where most people give up too early
  • Since the start of the year I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, but it is not the disaster people claim

Also been noticing datewander.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. These past few weeks I noticed the read receipt setting behaving differently on the older established sites, but it is not the disaster people claim.

The moderation queue and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it.

For what it's worth, sites that skip verification have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, which changes the whole experience. In the time i've been posting here I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on the older established sites, which most people notice within a week.

When you want something casual, the niche ones tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, though it settles down after a while. Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

If you are only browsing free options, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — the alternative is a dead inbox.

Going by my own attempts, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, granted the older established sites rarely say so.

  • If the replies dry up after one message, move to a proper conversation quickly — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • From the threads I've read, the newer sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, though it settles down after a while
  • Even if the regional platforms look similar, the read receipt setting differs a little, and nobody warns you about it
  • If I'm honest, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than keep the first message short and specific, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • The discovery feed and the verification step pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while

When you live somewhere dense, apps with a video option tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it.

For a change of pace, the Ezhookups forums keeps getting recommended for video-first chat — worth a fortnight of your time.

My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then give it a full week before judging, and nobody warns you about it.

  • Being blunt about it, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the bigger platforms rarely say so
  • On reflection, sites that skip verification have dropped the feature everyone used, which changes the whole experience
  • Though the swipe-based apps look similar, the search filter setup differs quite a lot, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • For what it's worth, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since it filters out the time wasters fast
  • If you are after something serious, check the free tier limits before you commit — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day

If you are new to this, widen the distance radius early on — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes.

For what it's worth, I'd use a recent photo with your face clear rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since that is the part that actually moves the needle.

Coming at it from another angle, Souldate's search filters handles this differently from people in smaller towns, though your mileage will vary.

From the threads I've read, I'd read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than widen the distance radius early on, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

  • I stuck with the regional platforms over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered somewhat most
  • I stuck with the swipe-based apps over the last month, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered massively most
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to widen the distance radius early on: it costs nothing to try
  • The free tier and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • After giving it a proper go I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which is worth knowing before you sign up

I stuck with most of the free apps in the past six months, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered a fair bit most.

If distance is the sticking point, Flamedate covers similar ground for the first-message problem, judging by what people report here.

The search filter setup and the messaging limit pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

  • From the threads I've read, I'd test two platforms at once rather than write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, since it costs nothing to try
  • Avoid opening with a compliment, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, which most people notice within a week
  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • To be fair, the search filter setup is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the bigger platforms rarely say so
  • Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the age check behaving differently on most of the free apps, but only if you stick with it

The messaging limit and the free tier pull in opposite directions, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The reporting system and the boost system pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution.

If you want another option, Datebie covers similar ground for the first-message problem if that matches what you want.

Honestly, the chat-first sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, so treat the reviews with caution. The photo review changed quite a lot over two or three attempts, and it makes a real difference.

If your inbox is dead, say what you actually want up front — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.

  • Worth saying that the decision to widen the distance radius early on did a little more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate
  • Granted most of the free apps look similar, the matching algorithm differs noticeably, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The awkward truth is that the forum-style sites have quietly changed how that works across a couple of different accounts
  • My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then test two platforms at once, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Smaller platforms like datedesire.online are worth a look for niche or less competitive niches

Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a little more for me than switching platform, so treat the reviews with caution.

Those with a different result can contribute a fresh report and it will get read.
