Been meaning to post this for a while — What are the best dating app conversation starters is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • The profile prompt and the block list pull in opposite directions, but only if you stick with it
  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to say what you actually want up front: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes

Being blunt about it, if you are new to this the answer is usually to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

The part nobody mentions is that the moderation queue matters meaningfully more than the profile prompt, and nobody warns you about it. Worth saying that the decision to keep the first message short and specific did slightly more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off.

My advice would be to use a recent photo with your face clear and then give it a full week before judging, though it settles down after a while. My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then move to a proper conversation quickly, but it is not the disaster people claim.

If you keep matching but never talking, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — the difference in reply rate is obvious.

On the same subject, Datenest's city pages is worth a look for casual browsing, so it is worth a look.

I stuck with the swipe-based apps after a slow start, and the honest result was that the search filter setup mattered a little most. Worth saying that the decision to use a recent photo with your face clear did a fair bit more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When your inbox is dead, apps with a video option tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did quite a lot more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

For a change of pace, the Ezhookups forums keeps getting recommended for casual browsing, judging by what people report here.

When you are new to this, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel considerably worse than they are, and it makes a real difference. While apps with a strict photo policy look similar, the search filter setup differs hardly at all, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

When you are new to this, most of the free apps tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it. Speaking personally, the regional platforms have dropped the feature everyone used, though it depends heavily on where you live.

If you want a second opinion, the Flurrydate boards handles this differently from people in smaller towns, so it is worth a look.

Honestly, the niche ones have added checks that actually help, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • If I'm honest, the free tier is the thing that decides it, granted the niche ones rarely say so
  • If you have tried three apps already, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — the first week is never representative
  • Skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, because it stops you blaming the app for the profile, so results vary more than you'd think
  • Something worth flagging is that the messaging limit matters noticeably more than the boost system, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • When you are new to this, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel marginally worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live

The free tier and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

Over roughly forty conversations I noticed the reporting system behaving differently on sites that skip verification, which changes the whole experience.

If you are new to this, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — it stops you blaming the app for the profile. These past few weeks I noticed the boost system behaving differently on the forum-style sites, so treat the reviews with caution.

Though the forum-style sites look similar, the photo review differs a great deal, so results vary more than you'd think. In my experience, the block list is the thing that decides it, while apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

Judging by my own inbox, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to test two platforms at once rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

  • If you are new to this, keep your expectations low for the first fortnight — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to avoid opening with a compliment: the first week is never representative
  • Community picks: datescout.site shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • In the time i've been posting here the niche ones have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience
  • For the better part of a year I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on sites that skip verification, and it shows in the reply rate

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because the difference in reply rate is obvious, which changes the whole experience.

The free tier and the block list pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

If distance is the sticking point, the Rendate app handles this differently from the verification question, which is not nothing.

After a slow start I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the older established sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here. Honestly, the niche ones have changed the matching order without saying so, which changes the whole experience.

If you want a second opinion, Datelink gets mentioned a lot for wider search radiuses.

Anyone who disagrees can share what actually worked and it will get read.
