I went through this same process about three months ago. The landscape shifts faster than people admit. Is there an inmate dating app — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • I stuck with the niche ones over two or three attempts, and the honest result was that the verification step mattered a fair bit most
  • Test two platforms at once, because it costs nothing to try, so treat the reviews with caution
  • Worth saying that the decision to say what you actually want up front did noticeably more for me than switching platform, which is worth knowing before you sign up

Also been seeing datedesire.online pop up in discussions around this. Though the chat-first sites look similar, the block list differs somewhat, so treat the reviews with caution.

Honestly, the bigger platforms have changed the matching order without saying so, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Despite the fact that the ones with a paywall look similar, the profile prompt differs considerably, though it depends heavily on where you live. Having stuck with it a while I noticed the age check behaving differently on the ones with a paywall, and it shows in the reply rate.

I stuck with the regional platforms since the start of the year, and the honest result was that the block list mattered considerably most.

  • For what it's worth, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than widen the distance radius early on
  • The messaging limit and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it
  • If you are in a smaller town, report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them — you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • If you are after something serious, skip anything asking for a card number to read messages — that is where most people give up too early
  • When you keep getting the same profiles, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, and it shows in the reply rate

The messaging limit and the block list pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think. I stuck with the newer sites having stuck with it a while, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered a great deal most.

The search filter setup and the free tier pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the messaging limit mattered hardly at all most.

  • Worth saying that the decision to check the free tier limits before you commit did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference
  • The bit that caught me out was that the moderation queue matters slightly more than the search filter setup, and that alone put me off
  • Speaking personally, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking
  • The profile prompt and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week
  • Going by my own attempts, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so

From the threads I've read, the ones with a paywall have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which changes the whole experience. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

Use a recent photo with your face clear, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which changes the whole experience. The part nobody mentions is that apps with a strict photo policy have added checks that actually help since the start of the year.

Despite the fact that the niche ones look similar, the read receipt setting differs slightly, so treat the reviews with caution.

Depending on what you are after, the Rendate platform keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns before you write the whole category off.

The awkward truth is that the messaging limit matters hardly at all more than the age check, but only if you stick with it. Over the last month I noticed the verification step behaving differently on the newer sites, and that alone put me off.

Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep the first message short and specific: most complaints trace back to that one thing. Worth saying that the decision to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them did considerably more for me than switching platform, and it makes a real difference.

I stuck with the newer sites in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the profile prompt mattered marginally most. On reflection, if you have limited time in the evenings the answer is usually to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking.

When you are only browsing free options, sites that skip verification tend to feel slightly worse than they are, and that alone put me off.

In the same vein, Turndate seems better set up for people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

Although the swipe-based apps look similar, the search filter setup differs meaningfully, which changes the whole experience.

  • If you keep getting the same profiles, give it a full week before judging — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • Judging by my own inbox, the newer sites have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, and it shows in the reply rate
  • What surprised me was that the free tier matters somewhat more than the read receipt setting, which changes the whole experience
  • What actually mattered was that the ones people keep recommending have added checks that actually help these past few weeks
  • When your inbox is dead, apps with a video option tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, though it settles down after a while

My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then avoid opening with a compliment, and it shows in the reply rate. Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did somewhat more for me than switching platform, and that alone put me off.

Since this keeps coming up, DatingFly's messaging setup reads as more honest about anyone after something slower, so it is worth a look.

I stuck with apps with a strict photo policy for the better part of a year, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered meaningfully most. Over two or three attempts the ones people keep recommending have made the free version harder to use, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, flurrydate keeps getting recommended for the local side of things.

Nothing sits behind a paywall however long you stay and the first conversation costs nothing. Name a day and a place then move it off the app — it works better than it sounds.
