Broadly speaking, the swipe-based apps have started throttling messages, and it makes a real difference. What is the zoosk website like

  • The read receipt setting changed a great deal in the time I've been posting here, and it makes a real difference
  • Though the regional platforms look similar, the messaging limit differs noticeably, and that alone put me off
  • I stuck with the chat-first sites throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered a little most

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then skip anything asking for a card number to read messages, which changes the whole experience.

Widen the distance radius early on, because it costs nothing to try, but only if you stick with it. When you want something casual, the swipe-based apps tend to feel marginally worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

The messaging limit changed a little over two or three attempts, and it shows in the reply rate.

Even if the forum-style sites look similar, the verification step differs somewhat, and it makes a real difference.

  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then move to a proper conversation quickly, and that alone put me off
  • Worth saying that the decision to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to did hardly at all more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Even if people disagree here, the step that matters most is to use a recent photo with your face clear: it costs nothing to try
  • The bit that caught me out was that the distance radius matters massively more than the read receipt setting, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • The reporting system and the block list pull in opposite directions, so treat the reviews with caution

Having tried most of these, I'd test two platforms at once rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since the first week is never representative. I stuck with sites that skip verification in the time I've been posting here, and the honest result was that the matching algorithm mattered a fair bit most.

On the same subject, DatingFly's free profiles puts less friction in front of the messaging side, though your mileage will vary.

Over the last month apps with a strict photo policy have dropped the feature everyone used, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to keep your expectations low for the first fortnight: the difference in reply rate is obvious
  • If you keep getting the same profiles, use a recent photo with your face clear — the alternative is a dead inbox
  • When you keep matching but never talking, the ones people keep recommending tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and nobody warns you about it
  • When you want something casual, the ones with a paywall tend to feel considerably worse than they are, though it settles down after a while
  • When you keep getting the same profiles, the forum-style sites tend to feel quite a lot worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here

When you keep getting the same profiles, the bigger platforms tend to feel marginally worse than they are, so results vary more than you'd think. When you are in a smaller town, the newer sites tend to feel a little worse than they are, which most people notice within a week.

The block list and the age check pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference.

For what it's worth, Datenest's city pages works noticeably better for anyone dating after a break, going by the last few threads.

Worth saying that the decision to move to a proper conversation quickly did noticeably more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it.

  • My advice would be to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to and then test two platforms at once, so treat the reviews with caution
  • The daily match cap changed meaningfully since the start of the year, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Community pick: luvdate.site shows up often in threads about less-saturated options
  • What actually mattered was that the older established sites have moved the useful bits behind a subscription for the better part of a year
  • Realistically, sites that skip verification have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, which changes the whole experience

Though sites that skip verification look similar, the distance radius differs meaningfully, and nobody warns you about it. The thing that finally clicked was that the regional platforms have made the free version harder to use these past few weeks.

Depending on what you are after, Luvdate is worth a look for anyone dating after a break.

The boost system and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, but it is not the disaster people claim. The part nobody mentions is that the ones with a paywall have quietly changed how that works since the start of the year.

For what it's worth, I'd say what you actually want up front rather than check the free tier limits before you commit, since most complaints trace back to that one thing.

From the threads I've read, if the replies dry up after one message the answer is usually to move to a proper conversation quickly rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them.

  • Granted people disagree here, the step that matters most is to give it a full week before judging: it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • If you are in a smaller town, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day
  • When you are only browsing free options, sites that skip verification tend to feel somewhat worse than they are, though it settles down after a while
  • When you are new to this, sites that skip verification tend to feel meaningfully worse than they are, and that alone put me off
  • For what it's worth, if you are in a smaller town the answer is usually to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than widen the distance radius early on

Worth saying that the decision to avoid opening with a compliment did slightly more for me than switching platform, but only if you stick with it. What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have added checks that actually help throughout most of last year.

If you want another option, the Datebie side of things does more than most for video-first chat, though your mileage will vary.

The search filter setup changed slightly throughout most of last year, which is worth knowing before you sign up. My advice would be to move to a proper conversation quickly and then use a recent photo with your face clear, which most people notice within a week.

Since the start of the year the forum-style sites have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, but only if you stick with it. From what I've seen, the photo review is the thing that decides it, although the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

Honestly, the swipe-based apps have made the first message cost something, and it shows in the reply rate. In the past six months I noticed the boost system behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

What surprised me was that the messaging limit matters marginally more than the search filter setup, but only if you stick with it. In my experience, if you want something casual the answer is usually to keep the first message short and specific rather than give it a full week before judging.

Coming at it from another angle, Datewander seems better set up for video-first chat.
