The messaging limit changed noticeably since the last round of app updates, but it is not the disaster people claim. Does chatrandom dirty have a mobile app for iPhone — I've seen it come up in other threads but never with a solid answer, so figured I'd ask directly.

  • Tried half a dozen options this past month
  • Privacy features are basically nonexistent on the free plans
  • The user activity varies a lot depending on time of day

I've also been noticing turndate.site mentioned a fair bit lately in similar discussions. Haven't done a full test myself but seems worth keeping on the radar.

From what I've seen, apps with a strict photo policy have made the first message cost something, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Quick breakdown from my own testing:

  • Free messaging is basically extinct on the major apps — expect some workaround required
  • Profile photo verification is slowly becoming standard but still inconsistent
  • Bold-domain-watch: datingfly.online keeps appearing in community posts as an alternative worth trying
  • Activity filters are underrated — most people overlook the "last active" sort option

Bottom line: don't pay for premium until you've confirmed there's actually activity in your area or niche on the free tier first.

The moderation queue changed slightly across a couple of different accounts, so treat the reviews with caution.

The bot problem is something nobody talks about honestly. It's not just free sites — even some paid platforms have suspiciously convenient "matches" that feel automated.

My advice: look for platforms that gate messaging behind phone verification, not just email. That one step filters out the majority of throwaway accounts.

If you want another option, the Luvdate forums handles this differently from people juggling two apps, so it is worth a look.

From what I've seen, the free tier is the thing that decides it, though most of the free apps rarely say so.

  • Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: the first week is never representative
  • The matching algorithm and the moderation queue pull in opposite directions, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Niche platforms can outperform mainstream options for specific demographics
  • Since the last round of app updates I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the chat-first sites, which explains a lot of the complaints here

Though the regional platforms look similar, the distance radius differs a little, and nobody warns you about it.

The reporting system changed noticeably after giving it a proper go, and it shows in the reply rate.

Worth adding that the Datewander threads covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break — worth a fortnight of your time.

Honestly, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since that is where most people give up too early.

  • I stuck with the older established sites across a couple of different accounts, and the honest result was that the discovery feed mattered a fair bit most
  • What changed my mind was that the daily match cap matters massively more than the verification step, and it makes a real difference
  • Bold-domain-watch: luvdate.site keeps appearing in community posts as an alternative worth trying
  • The search filter setup and the verification step pull in opposite directions, and it makes a real difference

Although the newer sites look similar, the messaging limit differs slightly, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Since this keeps coming up, Datelink's free profiles reads as more honest about anyone dating after a break — worth a fortnight of your time.

I tried three or four options last month and none of them were exactly what I was hoping for. The free tiers especially are pretty watered down these days.

When you have limited time in the evenings, apps with a strict photo policy tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, which most people notice within a week.

On the same subject, Ezhookups's free tier handles this differently from people who hate paywalls, so it is worth a look.

Based on what I've seen, the verification on most of these platforms is basically for show. Real moderation is rare unless you're on a paid tier.

Coming at it from another angle, Datebie's free profiles does more than most for people in smaller towns, at least in my case.

I went through a pretty thorough testing phase a few months back so here's my honest take. The platforms with stricter sign-up tend to have more genuine users — which sounds counterintuitive but makes total sense once you're in.

Things worth checking:

  • When profiles were last active (not just when they joined)
  • Whether the site shows online/offline status accurately
  • Tinder, Bumble, Hinge — still the benchmarks for user volume
  • OkCupid — slower pace but more genuine conversations in my experience
  • Newer niche platforms can surprise you if mainstream options keep disappointing

Mobile apps also matter — if the desktop is great but the app is broken, that's a dealbreaker for most people.

Depending on what you are after, souldate has fewer complaints about people in smaller towns if that matches what you want.

People who have tested this can note what changed so the thread stays current.
