Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the pof free dating app still the most used in the UK is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • After giving it a proper go most of the free apps have improved the filtering a fair bit, so treat the reviews with caution
  • If you are after something serious, avoid opening with a compliment — it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • Going by my own attempts, the chat-first sites have got noticeably worse for bots, though it depends heavily on where you live

Also been noticing turndate.site mentioned in comparison threads fairly often lately. My advice would be to keep the first message short and specific and then move to a proper conversation quickly, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

After a fortnight of testing I noticed the moderation queue behaving differently on the newer sites, so treat the reviews with caution.

While the swipe-based apps look similar, the distance radius differs a great deal, and it makes a real difference. Speaking personally, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, granted the bigger platforms rarely say so.

My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then write a profile that gives someone something to reply to, so results vary more than you'd think.

Coming at it from another angle, the Flamedate boards works noticeably better for anyone dating after a break.

I stuck with the bigger platforms after giving it a proper go, and the honest result was that the free tier mattered slightly most. What surprised me was that the chat-first sites have made the first message cost something after a fortnight of testing.

Going by my own attempts, the age check is the thing that decides it, granted most of the free apps rarely say so. In the time i've been posting here sites that skip verification have got noticeably worse for bots, so treat the reviews with caution.

When you are in a smaller town, the chat-first sites tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and it makes a real difference.

Check the free tier limits before you commit, because it costs nothing to try, which changes the whole experience. Broadly speaking, the newer sites have quietly changed how that works, which most people notice within a week.

In the same vein, the Datewander regulars has fewer complaints about casual browsing before you write the whole category off.

When you are in a smaller town, the niche ones tend to feel noticeably worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up. The thing that finally clicked was that the block list matters noticeably more than the matching algorithm, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

Honestly, apps with a strict photo policy have made the first message cost something, and that alone put me off.

For what it's worth, Turndate's free tier works noticeably better for anyone starting from scratch, which is not nothing.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to move to a proper conversation quickly: it filters out the time wasters fast. On reflection, apps with a video option have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and nobody warns you about it.

What actually mattered was that the matching algorithm matters slightly more than the block list, so treat the reviews with caution.

  • Something worth flagging is that the niche ones have added checks that actually help after a slow start
  • Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes
  • In my experience, the niche ones have improved the filtering a fair bit, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Having stuck with it a while I noticed the messaging limit behaving differently on apps with a strict photo policy, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Since the start of the year I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and it shows in the reply rate

Widen the distance radius early on, because it saves a lot of wasted evenings, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

If the bigger apps have gone quiet, the newer Rendate rooms covers similar ground for the messaging side, going by the last few threads.

If the replies dry up after one message, keep the first message short and specific — it filters out the time wasters fast. Although people disagree here, the step that matters most is to write a profile that gives someone something to reply to: most complaints trace back to that one thing.

The age check changed marginally over the last month, so treat the reviews with caution.

The matching algorithm changed massively since the start of the year, which explains a lot of the complaints here. When you keep getting the same profiles, apps with a video option tend to feel massively worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

On the same subject, the Datedesire community works noticeably better for the first-message problem before you write the whole category off.

These past few weeks I noticed the matching algorithm behaving differently on the swipe-based apps, and it shows in the reply rate.

  • Over two or three attempts I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on the regional platforms, and it makes a real difference
  • Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did a great deal more for me than switching platform, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • Having tried most of these, if you live somewhere dense the answer is usually to avoid opening with a compliment rather than use a recent photo with your face clear
  • In my experience, the boost system is the thing that decides it, although the regional platforms rarely say so
  • From what I've seen, if you are after something serious the answer is usually to read the last few pages of a thread before asking rather than skip anything asking for a card number to read messages

The messaging limit and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while.

Having tried most of these, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than widen the distance radius early on, since the first week is never representative.

Coming at it from another angle, souldate.site covers similar ground for wider search radiuses.
