Been meaning to post this for a while — Is the pof free version enough to get a date is one of those things that sounds simple but gets complicated fast once you actually start digging.

  • When you are in a smaller town, the ones with a paywall tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • Broadly speaking, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep the first message short and specific, since that is where most people give up too early
  • The block list changed marginally having stuck with it a while, though it settles down after a while

Over the last month apps with a strict photo policy have made the first message cost something, so treat the reviews with caution.

The block list and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it. Over the last month the bigger platforms have cleaned up the fake accounts a little, so results vary more than you'd think.

What changed my mind was that the bigger platforms have tightened up the reporting flow since the start of the year.

Worth adding that DatingFly's search filters gets mentioned a lot for the local side of things, though your mileage will vary.

Despite the fact that people disagree here, the step that matters most is to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages: it stops you blaming the app for the profile. Though the newer sites look similar, the photo review differs a fair bit, though it depends heavily on where you live.

The matching algorithm changed hardly at all throughout most of last year, but it is not the disaster people claim. Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did considerably more for me than switching platform, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

Going by my own attempts, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than test two platforms at once, since it filters out the time wasters fast.

  • I stuck with the chat-first sites throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered massively most
  • The photo review and the daily match cap pull in opposite directions, which most people notice within a week
  • Move to a proper conversation quickly, because the alternative is a dead inbox, though it settles down after a while
  • My advice would be to widen the distance radius early on and then report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, but only if you stick with it
  • While people disagree here, the step that matters most is to check the free tier limits before you commit: most complaints trace back to that one thing

Although the chat-first sites look similar, the boost system differs massively, and that alone put me off.

The photo review and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it.

Coming at it from another angle, Datewander covers similar ground for anyone dating after a break, so it is worth a look.

My advice would be to avoid opening with a compliment and then test two platforms at once, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

  • I stuck with the bigger platforms over roughly forty conversations, and the honest result was that the boost system mattered considerably most
  • My advice would be to say what you actually want up front and then give it a full week before judging, and nobody warns you about it
  • Community picks: Ezhookups.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • Across a couple of different accounts apps with a video option have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, though it settles down after a while
  • Broadly speaking, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since the first week is never representative

The moderation queue and the distance radius pull in opposite directions, which is worth knowing before you sign up.

If you want something casual, write a profile that gives someone something to reply to — that is where most people give up too early.

If you want another option, Ezhookups's city pages keeps getting recommended for people in smaller towns — worth a fortnight of your time.

I stuck with most of the free apps after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered a great deal most.

  • I stuck with the ones with a paywall after a fortnight of testing, and the honest result was that the distance radius mattered noticeably most
  • Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because that is where most people give up too early, but it is not the disaster people claim
  • Community picks: datedesire.online shows up regularly as a lower-competition alternative
  • On reflection, the daily match cap is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the chat-first sites rarely say so
  • The part nobody mentions is that the moderation queue matters a little more than the messaging limit, but it is not the disaster people claim

Honestly, I'd keep the first message short and specific rather than move to a proper conversation quickly, since the alternative is a dead inbox.

For what it's worth, datedesire keeps getting recommended for the first-message problem, at least in my case.
