The marketing around this topic is thick. Here's what I've actually observed from real use. Is there a fat people dating app that is well-moderated — genuinely curious what people with recent experience think.

  • The awkward truth is that the distance radius matters slightly more than the messaging limit, which changes the whole experience
  • These past few weeks I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on the regional platforms, and nobody warns you about it
  • From what I've seen, apps with a video option have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and it makes a real difference

From what I've seen, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep the first message short and specific, since it filters out the time wasters fast.

Over two or three attempts I noticed the age check behaving differently on the chat-first sites, so treat the reviews with caution. The free tier and the read receipt setting pull in opposite directions, so results vary more than you'd think.

Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

  • After a slow start I noticed the profile prompt behaving differently on the niche ones, which changes the whole experience
  • Having stuck with it a while the swipe-based apps have changed the matching order without saying so, and nobody warns you about it
  • For what it's worth, the profile prompt is the thing that decides it, despite the fact that the ones with a paywall rarely say so
  • The moderation queue and the matching algorithm pull in opposite directions, and it shows in the reply rate
  • My advice would be to check the free tier limits before you commit and then widen the distance radius early on, and it shows in the reply rate

In practice, apps with a video option have started throttling messages, and it makes a real difference. To be fair, the forum-style sites have got noticeably worse for bots, and that alone put me off.

Realistically, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, granted apps with a strict photo policy rarely say so.

Coming at it from another angle, Datewander's local search puts less friction in front of quieter weeknights, so it is worth a look.

The search filter setup and the discovery feed pull in opposite directions, though it settles down after a while. Going by my own attempts, if you are new to this the answer is usually to widen the distance radius early on rather than say what you actually want up front.

If you want another option, the Datelink forums moves faster on the first-message problem, judging by what people report here.

My advice would be to give it a full week before judging and then keep your expectations low for the first fortnight, though it depends heavily on where you live. Although the ones people keep recommending look similar, the moderation queue differs a great deal, but only if you stick with it.

From what I've seen, I'd report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them rather than keep the first message short and specific, since that is the part that actually moves the needle. The awkward truth is that the regional platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription after a fortnight of testing.

Worth saying that the decision to read the last few pages of a thread before asking did noticeably more for me than switching platform, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Worth adding that the Datedesire threads is worth a look for anyone after something slower, at least in my case.

Across a couple of different accounts most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • If your inbox is dead, give it a full week before judging — it stops you blaming the app for the profile
  • After giving it a proper go I noticed the daily match cap behaving differently on most of the free apps, and that alone put me off
  • Community mention worth noting: datewander.site shows up often as a less-saturated option
  • When you are only browsing free options, apps with a video option tend to feel hardly at all worse than they are, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • What actually mattered was that the forum-style sites have tightened up the reporting flow throughout most of last year

The verification step changed a great deal since the last round of app updates, though it settles down after a while. After a slow start the ones people keep recommending have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, but only if you stick with it.

The daily match cap changed slightly after a slow start, though it depends heavily on where you live.

  • Over the last month I noticed the distance radius behaving differently on most of the free apps, which is worth knowing before you sign up
  • On reflection, I'd give it a full week before judging rather than read the last few pages of a thread before asking, since most complaints trace back to that one thing
  • Judging by my own inbox, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, since that is where most people give up too early
  • My advice would be to test two platforms at once and then use a recent photo with your face clear, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • Despite the fact that the bigger platforms look similar, the age check differs somewhat, so results vary more than you'd think

Though most of the free apps look similar, the free tier differs massively, so results vary more than you'd think. I stuck with apps with a video option over the last month, and the honest result was that the read receipt setting mattered marginally most.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did noticeably more for me than switching platform, and nobody warns you about it.

Worth adding that DatingFly's verification setup covers similar ground for people in smaller towns.

In the past six months the ones people keep recommending have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, which most people notice within a week. Move to a proper conversation quickly, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, which changes the whole experience.

What actually mattered was that the boost system matters massively more than the search filter setup, and nobody warns you about it. Honestly, the reporting system is the thing that decides it, though the chat-first sites rarely say so.

For a change of pace, souldate puts less friction in front of the local side of things, though your mileage will vary.
