Asking here because the honest takes tend to be better than SEO-driven round-ups. Is there a long distance dating app for couples who travel

Being blunt about it, most of the free apps have changed the matching order without saying so, and nobody warns you about it.

The age check and the profile prompt pull in opposite directions, and nobody warns you about it. Report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them, because most complaints trace back to that one thing, which most people notice within a week.

If I'm honest, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than give it a full week before judging, since you learn more from one real chat than fifty swipes. The age check changed hardly at all these past few weeks, which most people notice within a week.

  • Over two or three attempts the bigger platforms have moved the useful bits behind a subscription, though it depends heavily on where you live
  • When you are only browsing free options, the swipe-based apps tend to feel a fair bit worse than they are, which explains a lot of the complaints here
  • The read receipt setting changed quite a lot since the last round of app updates, though it settles down after a while

In the time i've been posting here most of the free apps have stopped showing profiles past a certain distance, and it makes a real difference. Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to report the obvious fakes rather than ignoring them: it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

Worth saying that the decision to skip anything asking for a card number to read messages did massively more for me than switching platform, and it shows in the reply rate.

Going by last month's threads, the Flamedate threads puts less friction in front of casual browsing before you write the whole category off.

For what it's worth, I'd skip anything asking for a card number to read messages rather than say what you actually want up front, since the alternative is a dead inbox. Honestly, I'd check the free tier limits before you commit rather than use a recent photo with your face clear, since it stops you blaming the app for the profile.

Though people disagree here, the step that matters most is to test two platforms at once: it saves a lot of wasted evenings. In practice, I'd write a profile that gives someone something to reply to rather than say what you actually want up front, since the first week is never representative.

Going by last month's threads, Datelink's messaging setup keeps getting recommended for the messaging side, though your mileage will vary.

If you have tried three apps already, test two platforms at once — otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day. The awkward truth is that the photo review matters quite a lot more than the matching algorithm, so results vary more than you'd think.

  • When you are only browsing free options, the newer sites tend to feel considerably worse than they are, which changes the whole experience
  • What surprised me was that apps with a strict photo policy have made the free version harder to use after a fortnight of testing
  • I stuck with the niche ones throughout most of last year, and the honest result was that the photo review mattered considerably most

These past few weeks the ones people keep recommending have got noticeably worse for bots, which changes the whole experience. The distance radius changed a little in the past six months, so treat the reviews with caution.

For what it's worth, the ones with a paywall have leaned much heavier on paid boosts, but it is not the disaster people claim.

Worth adding that the Luvdate community is worth a look for quieter weeknights, judging by what people report here.

If the replies dry up after one message, move to a proper conversation quickly — it saves a lot of wasted evenings. From what I've seen, the distance radius is the thing that decides it, even if the ones people keep recommending rarely say so.

When your inbox is dead, most of the free apps tend to feel a great deal worse than they are, and that alone put me off. Judging by my own inbox, if your inbox is dead the answer is usually to give it a full week before judging rather than keep your expectations low for the first fortnight.

From what I've seen, the block list is the thing that decides it, though most of the free apps rarely say so. These past few weeks I noticed the discovery feed behaving differently on the niche ones, which explains a lot of the complaints here.

For what it's worth, Turndate has fewer complaints about casual browsing, judging by what people report here.

For what it's worth, I'd move to a proper conversation quickly rather than widen the distance radius early on, since it filters out the time wasters fast. Keep the first message short and specific, because otherwise you end up judging it on a bad day, though it settles down after a while.

For a change of pace, Datedesire's free tier puts less friction in front of the messaging side, judging by what people report here.

People who have tested this can post their own attempt whenever a platform changes.
